The DR7 Ladies Lab Coat takes its inspiration from the newly formed White Coat Ceremony. During which, new students are welcomed and presented with their first white coat: a material symbol of the Hippocratic Oath, that its wearer has made to each and every patient whom he or she encounters: a promise to heal and care. Originating at the University of Chicago’s Pritzker School of Medicine in 1989, the first full-fledged ceremony took place at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1993. Its conception marks a change in tradition, as previously students weren’t introduced to the Hippocratic Oath until the end of their education. Now, students are provided with clear guidelines regarding the expectations and responsibility appropriated for the medical profession at the start of their education. Not without its criticism, select people view it as a pointless ceremony, stating the oath is outdated and irrelevant to the modern practice of medicine. However, the teaching of medical professionalism and the need for well-defined guidelines that allows students to understand the ethical behaviour expected of them is essential. Now featuring at over 100 medical, dentistry, osteopathic medicine, and nursing schools in the US. As well as spreading abroad, to schools in Iran, Israel, Canada, UK, Dominican Republic, Brazil, and Poland. Students worldwide now consider the White Coat Ceremony a rite of passage on the journey towards a healthcare career.
